PowerLung Review & FAQs
Is PowerLung good for any condition of weakened lungs?
PowerLung is a fitness training machine designed to allow isolated training of the muscles used in breathing for both inhale and exhale. The muscles it is designed to train are: the diaphragm, the intercostals, and the accessory muscles. PowerLung is a product designed be used for exercise only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. You should always consult your personal physician.

Exercising increases respiration: Why do I need a "breathing workout?"
It is important for better total performance and enjoyment of activities to strengthen and train your breathing muscles independently of other muscle groups. During exercise, your breathing muscles respond to increased oxygen requirements and may become more aerobically conditioned, but exercise does not strength train them to give more strength, power, or endurance. Strength trained breathing muscles can help prevent or relieve respiratory muscle fatigue or maximization during exercise.

Do I need to train both my inspiratory (inhale) and expiratory (exhale) muscle groups?

Yes, it is beneficial to train both. Inspiratory to increase volume and expiratory to expel a greater volume of carbon dioxide.

What is the difference in flow resistance training and threshold resistance training?
Flow resistance training is to repetitiously restrict the volume of air flow. It is an approach that was designed to exercise, but not strengthen breathing muscles.
Isolated threshold resistance training, like weight training, is a work load program with incremental increases as the muscles strengthen. This is true training, not just conditioning, and is the only methods used by PowerLung.

Will my breathing become easier?

Yes, it will help you breathe easier at any level of activity or performance, at every age, and in any sport or exercise in which you participate. Medical research of isolated threshold resistance training demonstrates that over 25% improvement in tidal volume can be achieved in as little as 4 weeks. Customers report feeling less breathless in as little as 3-5 days.

Will it help my lactic acid turnover rate?

Using PowerLung's 3 x 10 x 2 Program can result in an increase of your O2 uptake, and thereby help slow twitch muscle fibers to utilize the acid. A winning combination! The process effectively reduces lactic acid into a fuel.

I feel as if I cannot get enough air. Can PowerLung help with this feeling of being winded?

The breathless feeling you describe is known as dyspnoea. Independent studies show that using PowerLung can relieve this feeling even in elite athletes. Most customers report less breathless in only 3-5 days of regular use.
To achieve this, most people use the PowerLung 3 x 10 x 2 Program. Instructions on this Program, along with other usage programs and tips, is included with every PowerLung product.

How much time should I spend training with PowerLung?
To achieve maximum results, follow the instructions for the 3 x 10 x 2 Program in your PowerLung User Guide. This program normally takes about 3 minutes each time.
Once you have customized the PowerLung Inhale Threshold Control and Exhale Threshold Control to match your personal abilities and goals, begin the 3 x 10 x 2 Program. This program is designed for you to take 3 sets of 10 breaths 2 times a day. That is a total of 30 breaths. Don't forget, you can use your PowerLung to warm up before any activity, exercise or competition

Can I use PowerLung when I'm injured?
If you are unable to workout or perform in sport activities due to a non-respiratory injury, PowerLung is an excellent way to maintain top condition of your respiratory system, as you recover. Maintaining top respiratory strength allows you to return to your training at a higher intensity level after injury.

Can my family or team share a PowerLung?
Other people should not use your PowerLung, for health reasons, just as your family or team would not use one drinking glass or toothbrush.

Can you adjust the level of resistance for both inhaling and exhaling?
PowerLung is the only machine that has independently adjustable resistance-load cells designed for the user to set the resistance. Other lung muscle trainers concentrate on only inhaling or use an uncontrolled flow. Recent studies prove that isolated threshold resistance training for both inhaling and exhaling can improve the efficiency and power of your muscles.
