Swimfin – Swimming Aid

The¬† Swimfin story started almost twenty years ago. In the late 1980s Kevin Moseley was a self employed swimming instructor.¬† Just for fun, he took a couple of old foam swimming floats and made a fin that could be tied on to his back. At the end of lessons with a group of kids he would put on the fin for a few minutes of play-time to reward the children for their efforts during the session.¬† The kids always enjoyed this time: Kevin would chase the kids around the shallow end of the pool, giving some practical use for the swimming skills the kids had been working on namely, not getting caught by the ‘shark’ in the water.

That first prototype SwimFin was the only one of its kind for many years. By chance, Kevin heard that the BBC television show ‘Dragon’s Den’ was looking for participants and so, just out of curiosity, he applied. Kevin, and his new product idea, sailed through the application process, and before he knew it, he was invited to the London studios of the BBC and found himself telling these potential investors, the ‘Dragons’ about SwimFin.¬† In a few short weeks he had prepared a business plan and a ‘defence’ of his SwimFin idea strong enough to withstand any attack.¬† It wasn’t until Kevin had done this that he realised what a good thing he had.¬† Certain Dragons agreed and offered to invest in SwimFin. This was briefly shown on television, however, as Kevin chose to reject their 50% equity request, the Dragons liked SwimFin so much that they wanted a big piece of the pie, Kevin said a polite ‘no thank you’ and looked elsewhere. After several meetings with other potential investors who all wanted a 50% stake, Kevin decided to self fund the project himself.

Since then its been an hectic time for Kev Moseley and SwimFin. The product has been redesigned and improved. Before it could be mass produced, SwimFin had to be rigorously tested to ensure it conforms to world-wide safety standards. Patent protection around the world had to be secured, and the trademark registered. But all the hard work is about to come to fruition.

SwimFin is the first truly new development in swimming aids for decades. Worn on the back, SwimFin does not hamper or restrict the ability to move in the water.

SwimFin is a flotation device that provides as much buoyancy as the swimmer needs while helping maintain a good position in the water. Other swimming aids tend to tip the swimmer forward or hold them upright, resulting in a swimming position that impedes movement through the water, and actually makes swimming more difficult. SwimFin on the other hand gives only the support needed, giving the user the FEEL of independence, and thus encouragement and motivation.

With SwimFin, the lower you are in the water the more support it will give you, as with the beginner swimmer. The higher you are in the water the less support it will give you as with an improved swimmer. SwimFin compensates for different abilities.

It’s a fact that the human body is naturally buoyant: we don’t sink to the bottom of the pool and crawl along the floor like a crab. By using too much buoyancy assistance some of the other swimming floatation aids lift the body unnaturally in the water, and if placed wrong tipping it forward, and in this case the body acts on a see-saw principle which then forces the face into the water as the hips and legs come up (which in most cases causes panic). Because SwimFin is predominantly vertical and out of the water, it works in harmony with the user‚Äôs natural buoyancy level.

SwimFin makes learning to swim fun, but even after it has done it’s job as a learning aid, it will always find use as a water toy, strengthening ability and building confidence.

How Swimfin Works

With the beginner, the body is lower in the water causing SwimFin to be more submerged,(imagine pushing a beach ball under the water) thus giving the swimmer more uplift and support, without the arms being restricted. For the really confident beginners SwimFin could replace the armbands forever!

As confidence grows, there’s a more improved body position (this is a clever bit), SwimFin appears more out of the water, now giving a little less support. Generally at this stage the armbands or other devices would be reduced, SwimFin does it automatically, working with the swimmers natural ability but also giving the immediate support if required to, they trust SwimFin.

In a horizontal position, SwimFin is virtually out of the water giving very little or no support so even the better swimmers can wear it all the time, just remember, if its out of the water its no longer a buoyancy aid but the kids are having fun and because it’s streamlined, will not impede movement through the water .

SwimFin is great for swimming on the back, it replaces the use for teacher/parent support by giving maximum uplift. (Beach ball) It encourages a better streamlined leg kick which helps to establish balance. If required the swimmer only needs to roll to the side and SwimFin will turn the child onto its front and help establish and maintain a safe or secure standing position.

SwimFin is multi stroke functional. Click here to take a look at the video for a quick explanation for Breast stroke and Fly.
